New Talitha Kum Network in Benin

From March 13 to 15 in Dassa-Zoumé, 45 Religious women and men gathered for a formation conducted by the Talitha Kum Africa team. The goal of this formation was to deepen the participant’s understanding of the realities of human trafficking in Benin and across West Africa, while equipping and strengthening their skills to identify, prevent, and respond to exploitation

We were honored by the presence of Bishop François Gnonhossou and Fr. Aubin Gbessat, Episcopal Vicar, who expressed their support and encouragement for carrying out the mission of Talitha Kum throughout the country. They congratulated the participants, highlighting that representatives from 7 of the 10 dioceses of Benin took part in the formation.

The core training team was composed of Sr. Kayula Lesa, Regional Coordinator for Talitha Kum Africa, along with Sr. Yvonne Bambara who preceded her in this role, and Sr. Marie-Reine Zanou, regional hub coordinator for the Talitha Kum networks in West Africa. During the formation, participants took part in various workshops and presentations on the role of Talitha Kum network and the Church in preventing trafficking, along with national and international legal frameworks. The sessions also highlighted the importance of collaboration, networking, awareness-raising, and youth and survivors empowerment.

Most importantly, the participants gained a clearer understanding of the root causes of trafficking and how to recognize its signs in their communities. In Benin, the common forms of trafficking include domestic servitude, child labor, and sexual exploitation, all exacerbated by poverty. The cultural beliefs around witchcraft to the stigma faced by children so-called “enfants sorciers” is also prevalent; children born with perceived “differences” or those whose mother dies during childbirth, are often rejected by their communities and placed at high risk of trafficking.

The three-day formation was highly impactful with strong participants’ engagement and insightful sharing. It culminated in the establishment of a national team, led by Sr. Florence Agbani, OCPSP, committed to the anti-trafficking mission as part of the Talitha Kum global network.

With the launching of the Talitha Kum Network in Benin, we will align ourselves with the Beninese government’s policy to put an end to human trafficking. May the Lord help us and, with the support of our partners, provide us with the necessary means to protect the most vulnerable from these practices.” said Fr. Firmin Some, member of the Talitha Kum Benin national team.

Congratulations to Talitha Kum Benin!!

Sr. Kayula G. Lesa, RSC, Appointed Regional Representative for Africa

Sr. Kayula has worked with the Jesuit Social Apostolates, the Sr. Kayula has worked with the Jesuit Social Apostolates, the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) and the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR). In 2014, Pope Francis appointed her as a Member of the Pontifical  Commission for the Protection of Minors and she served in this capacity for 8 years. Currently, she is the National Coordinator of Talitha Kum Zambia (TAKUZA), working to prevent and address human trafficking.

____

I am honoured to be appointed as the Talitha Kum Africa Regional Coordinator as this responsibility will serve as a significant platform for carrying out the mandate my congregation, the Religious Sisters of Charity, placed on each Sister, that of working to prevent and address human trafficking wherever one was serving. This commitment dates back to the 2007 General Chapter which, over the years, has seen renewal as the issue of human trafficking continues to be at the centre of our social justice mission.

Talitha Kum International is a valuable space for engagement in anti-human trafficking work. The emphasis on networking and collaboration is essential, facilitating the growth of our work as we carry our mission, both at National and Regional levels.

I therefore consider it my primary mission to promote strong networks within the Africa Region – building on what the outgoing coordinator, Sr. Yvonne Clemence Bambara from Burkina Faso, has done brilliantly over the past six years. I also wish to strengthen anti-human trafficking advocacy, drawing on my work experience in the field of social justice over the past 24 years. Working very closely with national coordinators, hub coordinators, and Youth Ambassadors, we will do everything possible to address human trafficking issues in Africa which are becoming increasingly complex, especially in the context of widespread human smuggling and irregular migration across the region.

It’s a privilege for me to be part of the Talitha Kum International Coordinating Committee (TKICC) as this global platform will provide me with opportunities to learn best practices from other members. I am therefore deeply grateful to both the UISG leadership and the leadership of my Congregation for this opportunity to serve in this role. I will rely on your continued support and accompaniment.

Sr. Yvonne Bambara: 6 Years of Leadership as Regional Coordinator for Talitha Kum Africa

After six years as regional coordinator for Talitha Kum in Africa, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the various local coordinators who have supported me in this mission through their commitment in the field to raising awareness, prevention, advocacy, and support for survivors of trafficking.

I sincerely thank our partners, Youth Ambassadors, and members of the Africa coordination team for their dedication.

Over the past 6 years,  17 African countries have joined Talitha Kum, extending our network of dedicated members united in the fight to protect human dignity. As a result of our efforts, children, women, young people, and men have been saved from trafficking, and we give thanks to God for this.

I would like to thank the international coordinator of Talitha Kum, Sr. Abby Avelino, MM, and the entire international team for their close collaboration.

It is with joy that I pass the torch to Sr. Kayula Lesa, RSC, to continue this noble mission of fighting human trafficking in Africa. May the Lord assist her and may Saint Josephine Bakhita be her inspiration.

Best wishes to Talitha Kum Africa.
